Carola van Dyke
“I would describe my style as eccentric, exuberant, colourful, quirky, eclectic and idiosyncratic painting with fabrics. After having lived in the UK for over 20 years, I feel I have managed to keep some of the Dutch design values in my British themes. I want the product to be beautiful, but should also bring a smile to your face.”
Overview
Carola van Dyke is a Dutch-born textile artist with a passion for mixing and matching old and new fabrics into taxidermy animal sculptures and pillows.
Carola began her career in the 90s after studying fashion & illustration at the College of Fine Arts in the Netherlands. First working as a free-lance illustrator in London, then, later creating and designing for her own children’s clothing store. Using leftover fabrics from the clothing designs, she began her textile art journey.
Today, her studio is located in Hastings on the south coast of England at The Yard, a creative hub filled with 40+ artists and makers. Carola and her team work in a converted Victorian stable collaborating on the production of each custom made piece. Carola hand-cuts fabric as if she’s drawing with her scissors. Each piece is made with a one-of-a-kind mix of handpicked vintage and modern British fabrics.
Her first textile taxidermy commission, was a collection of full sized stags using Liberty silk scarves for their display in London. She has since collaborated with luxury department stores, fashion houses, interior designers and celebrities including Liberty London, Anthropologie, Knoll Textiles, Bergdorf Goodman, and Joseph Abboud.
For more than 30 years, Carola has lived in and been inspired by the countryside of England.
